One of the most impressive caves with stalagmites and stalactites. This is classed as one of the seven wonders of Portugal. The tour is guided and you get to explore around 300 meters of the 11km caves and go at a depth of just over 100 meters. Well worth a visit.

Beautiful and utterly unique place with a phenomenal atmosphere and gorgeous rock/mineral formations. Definitely worth a visit - for tourists, it is perfectly doable (with a car) to visit this in the morning and still go to a couple other beautiful monuments in the region (Mosteiro da Batalha, Convento de Cristo in Tomar, Mosteiro de Alcobaça, Fátima as examples) within the same day, making it a fantastic day trip from Lisbon. Regarding the visit to the Caves, it could however be improved in some points. The visit starts with a ten minute documentary video, which is far from ideal: for our visit it was spoken in PT and subtitled in FR, so ENG speakers were just sitting in the dark looking at the video for 10 mins without a clue and, to begin with, a documentary like this is not in any way an engaging way to present information when you have such a beautiful location ahead. Furthermore, the explanations given during the tour were a bit bland and delivered only in PT. Overall, while it is a beautiful and visit-worthy place inherently, much could be done to improve the visit in terms of the delivery of information and engagement.

I visited this gruta about a month ago while my mother was visiting from California. I have traveled a lot in my life and I must say that this is the most incredible thing I have seen in my life. Nature is wonderful! You go into this cave and you feel like an ant inside an anthill. You see different rock formation carved by water and time; it is a whole different subterrenean world there that has been carefully crafted through the years. You feel like you are in a dream without limits. It is a wet cave so you see water everywhere and you feel the humidity. It is a little cool, but comfortable. Admire the colors, the shapes and the magic from this hidden treasure. IF you come to Portugal, you must visit this unique master piece of nature.

This is a great attraction! It’s a little out of the way in the middle of no where but worth a visit! It wasn’t very busy as it was a super hot day. We had lunch at the restaurant there and it was delish. Something for everyone. They have English tours if you are interested. It’s what we did. The tour guide was great!
