Bosnia and Herzegovina is a Southeastern European nation located on the Balkan Peninsula. It has three main ethnic groups, the Bosnian Muslims, the Croats and the Serbs.
It was once ruled by the Ottoman Turks who eventually lost power to Austria-Hungary. After World War II, what we now know as Bosnia and Herzegovina became a part of Yugoslavia. In the early 90s, Bosnia and Herzegovina became independent from Yugoslavia. This caused tension amongst the multiethnic population, resulting in a devastating war.
Bosnia and Herzegovina is characterized by its beautiful mountain ranges, medieval towns and stunning rivers and lakes. However, what makes it truly unique and different from other European countries is its blended East and West culture, a result of Ottoman and Austria-Hungary influences. After the heartbreaking civil war in the early 90s, the country began to rebuild and ever since, it has become a destination on the rise. The country is also appealing to tourists because a vacation in Bosnia and Herzegovina won't break the bank.
Mostar is one of the most picturesque places in Bosnia and Herzegovina and definitely worth a visit. While you're there, check out the iconic Stari Most bridge and climb the Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque minaret for the best views of the town and river. Craving some nature? Check out the spectacular Kravice Waterfall and the Vrelo Bune spring and neighboring Blagaj Tekke mosque, all three sites are located in the southeastern part of the country. If you find yourself in the country during the winter months, take advantage of the country’s largest ski resort, Jahorina, located in the Dinaric Alps. Most international flights will fly into the capital, Sarajevo, which is another place worth exploring. Don’t leave the city without stopping at the Baščaršija market and a local coffee shop for some Bosnian coffee, definitely not your average cup of joe.
The best time to travel to Bosnia and Herzegovina is during the months leading up to and following the peak summer months of July and August. Typically May, June and September are the best months to visit as the weather is pleasant, crowds are smaller and airfare and accomodations tend to be less expensive. However, the country is also home to many ski resorts, which are best enjoyed in the wintertime.
