I did not look into Ranua Zoo before my visit. I expected it would be a small scale petting zoo with farm animals and perhaps a reindeer or two. Ranua Zoo blew me away! It covers a large area with a great variety of animals in beautiful natural habitats. Exotic birds and mammals, all looking very well cared for. Wolves, a Polar Bear(!), Beaver! And many others. Such a selection of owls! You get the impression from zoo that those who run it genuinely care for these animals and conservation. At the time they were mourning the loss of their beloved lynx and wolverine from old age.
Nice place to visit. Clean and well maintained. Nice restaurant ja cafeteria for a snacks and of course nice selection of wildlife from Finnish nature+polar bears
I have to admit for me it was more a Wildpark than a Zoo. So don't hesitate to go there if you don't like zoos normally. We've been there during the winter season and it was very empty (okay maybe this was because of corona). A few animals were sleeping but still you could see a lot and it is also a nice experience to see them in the snow (the lynx were so lost it was kinda cute). Take warm clothes with you because there aren't any stores in the middle of the way to get some warm drinks. It was worth the way and the price.
I loved it here, the animals were content and they had good size enclosures that replicated as much as possible what the outside world would be like. It was a great family day out and there are other surprises like the sweet shop. Saw animals I hadn't seen before which was great
Very good zoo, even during the winter. Most of the animals are active during the cold season and there is a possibility to go to reindeer sledge riding.
Sharing is caring!
