If you are strolling along the park, don't miss a visit to the Ponds. Beautifully restored by volunteers, with the help of The Millennium Fund, the water now flows clean and host a diverse marine life, what attracts lots of migrating birds. Every year we have the return of the Swan couple that nests there and soon becomes the main attraction. You can buy bird feed at the Cafe, and just sit there watching the World go by. 30 years ago it used to house a mini Zoo along the Walled Garden (next to the Pond) but the recession of the early 90's saw it demolished and replaced by benches. The 3 ponds are a catchment area of the water coming down the chalk hills, and it is the start of the River Effra, that now, runs underground from here until it reaches the Thames, next to Vauxhall Bridge. Mind you I just remember my neighbour (in her 90's) said to me she met her husband here. Brockwell Park used to be known as the 'courting' area, where single ladies would come, Sunday afternoons, sit on the benches and wait for suitable bachelors, in the hope they would be asked for a walk around the Pond, and hopefully get married, like her. "Good gay old days", she said. (Nelly made me laugh, bless!)
