We parked at the ferry port after following advice from others and walked to the Alcazaba. The route was through meandering streets and past the huge cathedral but eventually we found a sign post to the fortress. Entry was free for EU citizens (€1.50 if not I think) and a gentle slope led us into the gardens. These were beautifully laid out and maintained with plenty of water features and shaded areas. You could also walk on part of the walls to look over the city. The second area was divided off by a large wall and gateway. One of the rooms here held a small cafe with excellent value vending machines. Again, you could walk on the walls before crossing the courtyard into the Christian fortress, built to defend against and use gunpowder weapons. This was a stark and open area with no plants but some lovely architecture in one of the towers and some nice old doors. The Alcazaba was certainly the highlight of our visit. Easy to get to and lovely to walk around. Some info boards would have made it even better so we could see how old each area was, what it was used for and the history of the fortress.

Great place in Almeria. Free entry closes early at three on a Sunday. Great space to walk around, through fab gardens and water features. The views of the city are fab. Must say that there are a few steps to climb before the entrance. You can also catch the C1 tourist bus from around the city. Variety of buildings and other stuff to wander around when you there. Recommend while in Almeria. 😀😀

Well preserved Fort with breathtaking views all over the city, from the harbour to the mountains! Reconstruction works in progress as well as archaeology ones. Free entrance for EU citizens! Almeria's Alcazaba is the best conserved and refurbished fort from the whole southern part of Spain! A landmark for city and a must see for tourists!

When I was there they gave me a a ticket and said it's for free. I'm like.. But this place is amazing? One of the highlights of my visit to Costa del Sol really, place has lots of cats that are absolutely adorable. If you don't like cats maybe keep some distance but they just loved me - wonderful!

Amazing fortress built by the Arabs and then reformed by the Spanish Kings. It's is definitely a place you must visit.
