2710-405 Sintra, Portugal
This place was amazing. You can easily take the train from Lisbon and I highly recommend hiking up to it (take the trail on the west side up) which is way more scenic than a bus yet note its over 1500 ft up. Go early and beat the crowds.
Very unique and beautiful place. It's hidden high up in the mountains. One can take a bus or a car ride there but best way to see it is on foot to climb to it through the gardens and steep walkways. Magnificent views on the way but an advanced hike.
We went here in the late afternoon as the crowds died down, this was an excellent time to check it out! Lots of stairs so make sure you are up to the challenge! If you are the reward from the top is excellent
Seems a good example of the age - the time of the Moorish kings when they ruled Portugal. The hills of Sintra were a good location for a lookout-castle north of Lisbon. Spend an hour climbing the hills! There are exhibits of the ancient people that were here before the Moors ruled, as well. The castle here is an older version of the castles that dot Portugal. The towers are not as big, but impressive nevertheless.
We went here about 6 o'clock at night and it was really windy. Have to be careful not to get blown off. It reminded me of walking around great wall of China. The views are amazing. It really gives you a good perspective on how many beautiful castles and palaces there are in Centra. are also great views of the Pena palace
