Christy:If you're visiting The Lofoten Islands in the winter, then trying to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights is a must. If this activity is high on your list, then plan your stay from September through March and head out on a clear night.

Christy:One of my favorite views in the region, Kvalvika Beach is a must for photographers and beach bums alike! Getting to the beach is just a one-hour hike from Fredvang.

Christy:Catching a wave at Unstad Beach in Vestvagoy is a must for any true surfer. Home to the most northern surfing school in the world, this beach is one of the most frequented in The Lofoten Islands and is your chance to surf surrounded by beautiful fjords jutting up all around you.

Christy:Located in Henningsvaer, Galleri Lofotens Hus is both a museum and an art gallery. This is the perfect activity for when you're craving a bit of culture and are looking to get indoors for a bit.

Christy:While still chillier than your average tropical paradise, Ramberg beach has relatively warmer-than-expected waters due to the Gulf Stream. Head here in summer to laze on the beach and, if conditions are good, brave a dip in the water!

Christy:If you're a hiking enthusiast in Vaeroy, then taking a trek up to Mastadfjellet is a must. The view from the summit is iconic so be sure to bring your camera!

Villages
These are some of the prettiest, most inviting villages I had the pleasure of visiting during my time in Lofoten.
Place
Christy:A quaint fishing village home to just 329 people, Reine is located on the island of Moskenesoya and is perfect for outdoorsy types. This is the place to come if you're into fishing, hiking, and for catching a glimpse of the Northern Lights.

Christy:The oldest fishing village in The Lofoten Islands, Hamnoy is situated on the east side of Moskenesoya just 2 kilometers from Reine. If you can plan your trip to Hamnoy any time, then come during May when the town celebrates Elijazzen Jazz Festival!

Christy:Henningsvaer is one of the most picturesque places to go in The Lofoten Islands, and that's saying something. Set on a few islands off the coast of Austvagoya, Henningsvaer can be reached via a winding, narrow road that emerges from the mountains.

Christy:Nusfjord is a beautifully preserved fishing village that is full of amazing scenery and traditional Lofoten culture. If you plan your visit in the summer, then I recommend heading to the outdoor spa -- you won't regret it!

Christy:A must-visit destination for photographers, Fredvang is home to two of the most iconic, and photogenic, bridges in the area. Not to mention, the landscape is dotted with sheep and the harbor is always buzzing with locals and visitors alike!
Beware: Once you settle into its easy-going groove, Fredvang will be hard to leave.

Christy:With its colorful houses stacked up against some of the most dramatic scenery in the region, Vaeroy is sure to sweep you off your feet. While there, be sure to hike up to Mastadfjellet and experience turquoise Breivika beach.

Christy:A gorgeous luxury property, Scandic Svolvaer is located on the island of Lamholmen in Svolvaer. This waterfront hotel features beautiful rooms, free wifi, a restaurant, and meeting spaces.
Bird watching from my balcony at this hotel was one of the most relaxing experiences I had in the region!
