My Guide to North East Iceland

The Northeastern region of Iceland is home to some of the country's most splendid natural attractions. Having explored the region multiple times, I'm more than happy to share some advice.

Here are some of my favourite highlights of the nature in Northeast-Iceland.

Dettifoss

Nína:Dettifoss is the most powerful waterfall in Europe. Seeing the waterfall and witnessing its incredibly raw energy is one of the most awe-inspiring experiences I've had. A must, if you're in the region.

Ásbyrgi

Nína:Asbyrgi is a horse-shoe shaped canyon which is believed to have formed after the last Ice Age. It offers gorgeous opportunities for hiking and camping.

Mývatn

Nína:Lake Myvatn is probably the prettiest lake in Iceland. Make sure to visit the Namafjall geothermal area and the Dimmuborgir rock formations while in the area. Note that midges are a huge problem in the area. It's good to make some precautions.

Nína:Gorgeous rock formations situated between Asbyrgi and Dettifoss.

Nína:Myvatn is a vast area, perfect to explore by bike. This tour ends with a soak in the Geothermal Baths near Myvatn (they resemble the Blue Lagoon).

Nína:I love this cafe/bistro in Akureyri! Their weekend brunch is perfect and they have so many varieties of food and traditional cakes. Also, the outdoor seating is perfect on a sunny day.
