Long line but moved quickly. Avoid the line and check your bag at the location outside the church. They give you a card you can use to jump the line. We did the Rick Steve's audio tour. Very good. In Sunday parts of the church were not accessible. Other times I've been there they were. Church free but you pay 4 euro to go on the roof and see the square. I thought it was worth it.

The church is definitely worth visiting and seeing from the inside - although in the summer from the early morning you may reckon with long (even tens of minutes or longer) queues. You will be surprised how many elements from the building (external and internal) you already know from books and other photos. For those who want to attend the mass - the entrance is from the north side, you should have a modest outfit (if necessary legs can be covered with available kerchiefs) and inform the service about the purpose of the visit - then they will direct through side passages to the presbytery where the mass is celebrated (during that time there is no sightseeing). Note: attending mass does not allow visiting the temple later, although you can see everything during the mass.

Stunning place. Be Prepared for a bit of a queue to get in, which depending on the weather can be draining. However the basilica is worth the wait. Amazing decor and detail once inside. Whilst free entry, you do have to pay if you want to go by the altar, treasury etc, which I would recommend. By the altar are some of the most amazing sights to behold. Would definitely go back to look at this again. I ensured that the shorts I wore were long and over the knee, and my partner ensured she covered her shoulders up before attending as they do make reference to no beach wear attire on the website and whilst queuing to get in.

I visited at 8.00am for mass. It was a truly moving experience! I don't speak great Italian but was more or less able to follow the service. Luckily there was a nun in front of me so I knew when to stand and kneel! A beautiful way to experience the basilica without the crowds.

Beautiful place. You can enjoy the views of this area and square by taking a break at one of the many cafes with "free" music. We sat at cafe around dinner time until it got dark and the difference between day and night are amazing and beautiful. Beware of birds trying to snatch at your food and mosquitoes attacking you for your delicious blood. Also, police will give you a warning if you are caught feeding the birds.
