Piazza del Duomo, 50122 Firenze FI, Italy
These 463 steps to the top are well worth the effort and the climb goes fairly quickly. There is a mid way point at the base of the dome where you can look down into the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. It is difficult to grasp how this was built by hand without modern power equipment. A stunningly beautiful structure with fantastic views of Florence!
The Duomo. Literally one of the most amazing creations and beautiful churches of all time. Made in a time with no modern machines, each piece of marble cut by hand. Pictures don't to this church justice! You can climb to the top (463 stairs) and see the cupola (the dome).
My favorite thing I experienced in Florence, maybe even Italy. Schedule a reservation to climb the stairs ahead of time. It’s over 400 steps through a narrow passageway built specifically for the maintenance workers of the renaissance. The stairs were definitely not designed for everyday people to climb. But that makes it even more fun. You can see the leftover tools and machinery the workers used to create the dome. You get a closeup view of the paintings on the dome. At the top you get a breathtaking 360 degree view of Florence. The climb up the stairs is totally worth it- I was 8 weeks pregnant when I climbed the stairs, so I was sick and tired, but even so it was worth it and an amazing experience.
Absolutely breathtaking views of Florence from the top! Be sure to buy tickets ahead of time as the line can get long. The climb to the top is tiring but well worth it. 463 steps I believe.
Try to get up just before the closing time to avoid the crowds. The walk up the 463 steps get your heart pumping but the views from the top are definitely worth it.
