We are fit and experienced hikers in our early sixties but still found this climb quite challenging and the toughest we've done. It's a short hike in terms of time of around two hours but the steepness and the extremely rocky surface makes it quite a challenge. Almost the entire route is covered with loose volcanic rock which is very slippery and needs great care especially when descending. Tour operators should give people more information about the nature of this climb and the fitness required. They all say it is easy to get the business and of course there are motor cycles waiting to take you to the top from the halfway point for a fee of course which would have been so boring and counter productive! We saw many people struggling even those much younger than us. About two hundred people or more climb each morning and they are mostly young people in a hurry to get to the top without much patience for those who do it at a slower pace. With so many people climbing in the dark we lost our guides until we got to the halfway point and found them again. She was most helpful with good advice and assistance through the toughest parts of the climb and the descent. We were given torches for the climb which was in darkness but it would have been much better to have head torches so you have both hands free for the scramble up the mountain. We were fortunate that sunrise and views from the top were magnificent and well worth the effort but special care is needed to climb and descend this mountain safely.

I absolutely refuse to fund the criminal activity occurring at Mt. Batur. There is no fee to enter the site nor is a guide required. A local “mafia” of sorts runs this entire small village. This is confirmed this via a visit to the area itself. When you attempt to hike without a guide, you are bullied and harassed by locals. Ultimately, not able to pass as more and more goons come to assist with the harassment. The best thing you can do for this is to NOT take ANY paid tour. You are directly promoting the criminal activity that is going on here. The stories we heard from locals would astound you, these are not good people. Visiting the town is beautiful enough, but for me hiking to the top is just inaccessible because I refuse to contribute a single dime to the thugs running the village.

Wonderful on top and on the lake. The trekking route is not too steep.

This is a really special experience, and you will not regret doing it. It is worth the early morning and it is worth the hike. If you are in Bali and are physically able to do it, you should. Seriously, a remarkable experience. Our guide was Arianto and he was great. Our driver was Komang Adi and he was good as well.
