Mt Batur, South Batur, Kintamani, Bangli Regency, Bali, Indonesia
2 hour hike up, done at sunrise like every other tourist. We had an amazing guide from one of the villages in the caldera. I’d recommend this place if even for how weird the experience of hiking it was. There is definitely a mafia-esk operation going on here, all the guides know each other. Our group collectively payed probably $160 dollars to be guided yet our guide was only making $10. Being approached by random (yet very friendly) people trying to sell you beer and chocolate at 4 AM was pretty funny. You and the 1000 other tourists begin to climb with locals following you all the way up trying to help you in the hopes that you buy something. We were lucky enough (as we passed hundreds of people), to see one guy puking everywhere! Got to the top, sunrise is amazing. Guide disappears and bring back coffee, banana sandwiches and hard boiled eggs. Then the monkeys and dogs wake up and run around the top of the mountain searching for scraps of food. Gave a dog some hard boiled egg and it followed us for 1:30 hours all the way down. If you just embrace it the whole experience is unique and quite hilarious.
I loved it. I didn't do the hike though. I had a jeep/4x4 experience. The little 36 years-old Red Suzuki was precious! The volcano is quite amazing and I had to much fun over the lava sand dunes and rocks! The guide found a flat surface and let me have a go at driving myself. It was great;)
An amazing and unforgettable experience! We started climbing to the top on 03:30 and after one and a half hour we reached the top. Our guides were very helpful and they prepared something for breakfast using the hot volcanic steam. The sunrise was awesome, so colourful and peaceful. At the top it is cold and you need a light jacket. Highly recommended.
Nice hiking trip at night to see the sunrise in the morning from the top. But Guide is absolutely not necessary!! You see the crowds going upstairs with their flashlights so the way upstairs is clear to see. We played 400K per person for the tour, way too much. Entry to the park is just 100K
Highly recommend going to Mt Batur. Did the sunrise Trekking Tour. Very exhausting. Not the easiest way up (but you can let you drive by Motorbike). Stunning view, incredibly cold at the top (~7°C) Totally worth it.
