Ikarian:The Forest Randi (or 'Gaia') is located in the central Ikaria, on the west side of the Sierra Atheras. It includes an area of about 16km², in an altitude up to 900m high, with steep geomorphology and constitutes 23% of the total forest area of Ikaria. It is a mature forest, whose age is estimated over 200 years and many of the older trees are more than 300 years old. It is one of the few remaining forests in the Eastern Mediterranean of this size and age. In the Randi Forest, there is a rare protected species of oak, the holm oak or holly oak or 'Aria' (Quercus ilex), which dates from the Miocene (5 million years old) and is a protected species. The Forest is perhaps the largest region in Greece, where there is no exploitation of this species. The Aria is an evergreen tree of 12 - 15m high or tall shrub and grows slowly. The presence of Aria in the Aegean islands is rare and occurs mainly as bush. Important risks for the Forest remain illegal logging, fires and overgrazing.

Ikarian:The estuary of the river Halaris is located about 2.5 km west - southwest of the village Armenistis, in Nas. It is a natural coastal wetland area of 19.9 acres. The torrent has a permanent flow almost all year-round with brackish water, it crosses the island in the direction from south to north and feeds mainly on small farmers scattered along the riverbed. The wetland is fed by fresh water from the dam of the artificial Lake Pezi, located 4 km upstream of the estuary. The wetland is located in an area desclared as a Site of Community Importance (code GR4120004), as a Special Protection Area (code GR4120005), as an Important Bird Area (code GR143) and A ' Archaeological zone (archaeological site under Raches), in the west where there is theTemple of Artemis. The wetland has a rare biodiversity of flora and fauna, as well as populations of many protected and endemic species. Some of them are Galanthus ikariae (plant only found in Ikaria), while presenting rich vegetation of reeds and trees of various species dominated throughout its length and oleanders, osier and lentisk. It also hosts a wide variety of birds, reptiles and amphibians, such as the Turkish lizard (rare protected species), the European eel (species that migrate from America for three years across the Atlantic ocean to reach the rivers of Ikaria), the otter (protected species), a rare species of freshwater crab and a benthic fish species of the genus Salaria, particularly important for the development of the zoogeographical freshwater fish fauna of Ikaria. The canyon also has a special meaning for many protected species of permanent and migratory birds such as the Falcon, the Egret and the Bittern, which traverse hundreds of miles seeking rest and feed in the wetland environment. The activities in the watershed are relatively mild, mainly grazing and cultivation. The major threats to the wetland resulting mainly from these two activities, are overgrazing and the intense irrigation of crops becomes uncontrollably by tires from the riverbed, thereby reducing the water level. Lately, another intense threat to the habitat, is the increased tourism during the summer months, since the beach of Nas is one of the best beaches in Ikaria. It was declared by UNESCO as a Cultural Heritage in accordance with the provisions of Article 6 § 1b of Law 3028/2002. The protection of the cultural heritage is designed to preserve the historical memory and upgrading of the cultural environment of the residents of the island of Ikaria. It is also characterized as a Monument under the provisions of Article 6 § 2 of Law 3028/2002, the original mechanism of the lighthouse as an important technical and scientific evidence for the lighting systems of lighthouses in the late 19th century. According to the law, any action on the above building is prohibited (repairs, maintenance, addition) or any construction activity in the vicinity of this, without prior approval of the request by the Ministry. The Lighthouse was built between 1886 and 1890 by the French Company of Lighthouses during the Ottoman Empire. It defines one of the most difficult passages in the central Aegean, between Mykonos and Ikaria. It lit for the first time on 20 May 1890 and joined the Greek lighthouses network on April 9, 1915 shortly after the Balkan wars. For many years, the lighthouse was operated with a primary energy source oil. In 1933, it begun to operate with LED "bulbs by petroleum vapors". The provision complements a clockwork system of rotation, clock type, takes a piece from a bob so as to yield the characteristic flare. During the Second World War, the lighthouse was converted into an outpost of the Italians and stayed off and suffered heavy losses. It reopened in 1945 with a temporary placement of an automatic acetylene torch, while work began on repairing the damage completed at intervals in 1949, 1958 and 1979, with the installation of new lighting equipment. In 1980 the Lighthouse Papas converted into electricity, keeping the system oil as a backup, until October 2000, when it was fully automated. The focal height is about 75 meters and it is visible from 25 miles to feature a white flare at 20''. Temple of Artemis Tavropolos
Ikarian:Visiting Hours Open all year outdoors. The bay of Nas is located in the northwestern part of the island, few kilometers away from Armenistis. There was the ancient harbor, which extended from the coast to the deep gorge of Halaris. Between these two extremes there is not communication today, since the extension to the ravine had been artificially blocked by tree trunks from the first years of piracy, by the residents of neighboring Laggada for defensive purposes. So,on the side of the beach a lake is formed, while the ravine displays rich vegetation and creates a picture of an exotic beauty! Today, the ancient quay of the port is preserved and some iron headlands, where ships binded. Many items allow scholars to believe that Nas was also a main settlement of the island. It is believed that it got its name, from either the word 'Naos' (=temple) or from the word Ma, the name of the goddess Artemis in Asia Minor, whose worship came at Ikaria during the Minoan times. So, a temple dedicated to the goddess Artemis Tavropolos was built. The name Tavropolos or Tavrovolos shows the status of the goddess, as a fertilizing power of nature and decay, while the revered of the goddess is called Tavropolion. It seems that people worshiped a wooden statue (idol) of the goddess, which was believed to be heavenly sent and not human made. Tavropolion was one of the earliest shrines of Artemis in ancient times. Today, only ruins of the temple survive and particularly its floor. Scattered everywhere, marble ruins are found of calcified remnants of the old limekiln, which burned down the whole temple to become building material, when it began to expand Christianity and inhabitants started to create temples of the new religion. The monastery is dedicated to the Annunciation and is called Mounde or Monte. According to tradition, a family from Chios, named Mounde, gave financial support for the restoration of the monastery, so the monastery was named after them. Another tradition, says that the name Monte comes from the Italian word '' il Monte'', ie mountain, as the Italian conquerors called it, during the Italian-Greek war, because it is located in a mountain setting. This is a nunnery, built around 1460 AD, after a dream of an Ikarian believer, who followed the instructions of Virgin Mary and digged the earth to find the image of the Immaculate Conception. At that location, the first monastery was built. Later, a widening of the monastery took place and two other chapels were created, dedicated to the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles and to the other to the Annunciation. Nas Beach
Ikarian:Nas, with about 50 residents, lies about 3.5 kilometres west of Armenistis on the north coast. Based on abundant evidence, scholars believe that Nas was a key ancient settlement. Its name derives from either the word 'Naos' (=temple) or the word Ma, as the goddess Artemis was called in Asia Minor, worshiped in Ikaria during Minoan times. A temple named Tavropolion was dedicated to her. The name Tavropolos or Tavrovolos signifies the capacity of the goddess as fertilizing power of nature and decay and protector of the navigators, while the temple for the goddess is called Tavropolion. The ancient harbour has been found, extending from the coast deep into the canyon loose. There is now no connection between these two edges, since the extension to the ravine. Inhabitants of neighbouring Laggada blocked it with tree trunks as a defence against pirates. This formed a lake on the side of the beach, while the ravine displays lush springs and creates a picture of exotic beauty.

Ikarian:Kampos is known for Oinoe, its ancient Ikarian capital, and its archaelogical site. The large homonymous, all-sand beach is also very famous among tourists. It is organised with umbrellas and sunbeds. Tip! It is very popular among families with young children. But frequent strong sea currents can make swimming difficult. Paralia Faros
Ikarian:One of the most popular touristic villages in the south, Faros (or Fanari) is located at the eastern end of the island, some 13 km from Agios Kyrikos and connected to the main road. It takes its name from the lighthouse ('Faros') that existed on the cape. In ancient times it was called Drakano. A few kilometres from the village centre stands the restored Tower of Drakano, which was used as a lighthouse and as a military watchtower. According to Greek mythology, Drakano was the land where god Dionysus was born. Faros has the largest southern beach, with sand and pebbles, which gets very crowded in summer by local and foreign tourists of all ages. There are also many restaurants, taverns, cafes and many lodgings. Access is from the main asphalt road from the airport or Agios Kyrikos. The nearby airport connects Ikaria with Athens International Airport as well as other Greek cities and islands, e.g. Thessaloniki, Limnos and Heraklion, mainly in summer.

Ikarian:The village that never sleeps! The largest in the north, essentially a second centre of the island, containing its third high school. It has more than 300 permanent residents, is sparsely populated through a dense forest and manages to keep its traditional architecture. The village has become known to visitors for the night life of its residents and the business hours of stores that open late at night, making the village famous for "Ikarian time". The paved square with the imposing church in the centre attracts summer crowds, who sit in cafes relishing local delicacies during the day and enjoying themselves in local bars in the evening. In the square you will find a workshop with homemade desserts, made with great care by the local "women's association of Raches", leading the visitor on a journey of delights! There are also traditional shops for souvenirs and gravures of Ikaria of another era! On August 6th the village organises one of the biggest feasts of the island in hono
