Zipline Adventure tour in Vík is a great combination of hiking through a breathtaking river canyon with a few ziplines in the mix. We have two ziplines, 240 and 140 meters long. There’s also a very short zipline we use to cross the river at one point.
Our zipline guides will meet up with you in the lobby at Vík hostel, 15 minutes before scheduled departure. There you’ll get dressed up in all the safety equipment and when all helmets are on, we jump into the ever sturdy Zipline vehicle and drive (ca. 3-5 minutes) to the beginning of the hike. If the cloud base isn’t to low we start at an excellent viewing point over Mýrdalsjökull glacier and you get to know the volcano Katla a little bit.
From the starting point it’s about 10 minute hike to the first zipline, it’s on uneven ground and we’ll have to tiptoe on rocks to cross the river at one point. When we’ve reached the first line, we’ve come to call “The Gentle Giant” of 240 meters, The first zipline guide crosses it and does the necessary checks on the way. Then the participants of the tour zipline above this gorgeous river canyon, Grafargil, zippin’ across the river and waterfall until you reach the platform on the other side. There will always be a guide in front and back to assist with hooking on the zipline and unhooking.
Now w hike between the ziplines, again for another 10 minutes and we might see some sheep along the way or if it’s in season we might pick on some crowberries along the trail. On those rare good summer days we have a little water brake deep down in the canyon and carry on between the cliffs. There we have to cross the river again to get to the last little bit of hike up-to the second zipline, this is done in a very creative way on a short zipline. We call it “The leap of faith”.
The last zipline is named “Little Rush” due to the fact it’s shorter and steeper than the previous one. We cross that one in the same matter as the first one, a guide at front and back and then one by one we zipp over the canyon, river and waterfall. From there we do the last bit of hike to the hostel again. If the weather isn’t on its best behaviour we might skip that part and fetch the car and drive you back to base.
Our guests are quite welcome to use the facilities at the hostel before or after the trip. It’s equipped with bathroom on each floor and speedy wi-fi in the lobby.
