Vatnshellir Cave is one of the most fascinating caves in West Iceland. It is a must-see if you're travelling in the Snæfellsnes area.
Follow the path of the lava flow 200 meters into the cave and 35 meters below the surface. Vatnshellir cave is one of the most easily accessible lava tubes in Iceland and is suitable for most people. Even so, you need to be reasonably fit to walk in the dark cave on uneven lava floor and up and down spiral staircases inside the cave.
The lava tube was naturally created nearly 8000 years ago in a volcanic eruption from a nearby crater. In this 45-minute guided tour you get to know the basics of how the cave came to be in a fun and educative explanation on the local geology. This is our easiest and most popular tour by far!
