The South Coast of Iceland has many natural wonders and quaint villages to explore. We will travel through lava fields, past mountains and glaciers to the southernmost part of Iceland.
Explore the South Coast in a car / bus
✓ Seljalandsfoss – This waterfall of the river Seljalandsá drops 60 meters
over the cliffs of the former coastline. It is possible to walk behind the
waterfall. 500 meters to the North West there is a another beautiful
waterfall, Gljúfurbúi, that is worth the walk.
✓ Skógafoss – Is one of the biggest waterfalls in the country with a width of 25 meters and a drop of 60 m. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.
✓ Reynisfjara:The Black Beach – Reynisfjara is a black pebble beach and
features an amazing cliff of regular basalt columns resembling a a rocky step
pyramid. Out in the sea are the spectaculary shaped basalt sea stacks
Reynisdrangar.
✓ Dyrhólaey – 120 m high peninsula with a hole through it. A 15 min hike is to the top. The view from up there is spectacular: To the north you can see the big glacier Mýrdalsjökull. To the east, the black lava columns of the Reynisdrangar come out of the sea, and to the west the whole coastline in the direction of Selfoss is visible – depending on weather conditions.
✓ Vík: A village – Its stretch of black basalt sand is one of the wettest
places in Iceland. The cliffs west of the beach are home to many seabirds,
most notably
puffins.
✓ Sólheimajökull glacier We head back through the farmlands and sand flats south of the Sólheimajökull glacier which is an outlet glacier from Mýrdalsjökull, the fourth largest glacier in Iceland.
Little Extra Touch – We will add some local touch and different places to visit depending on time, weather and mood.
