Ice caves are a rare phenomenon and this one is incredibly beautiful. Head out from Vik in a super jeep that will take you across rugged landscapes to one of natures most fascinating but fleeting wonders... the Dragon Glass Ice Cave.
Hop on a Super Jeep, put on your crampons and explore the mighty South Coast and Myrdalsjokull glacier. In this off-the-beaten-path tour to a natural ice cave underneath Katla volcano, you’ll admire the lunar surroundings, moss covered mountains and glaciers the South Coast of Iceland is so well known for.
After being picked up from Vík, we’ll take you on the road of “no man” that will take you to the mysterious cave. The road is bumpy and views are out-of-this-planet. You’ll feel like you are taking a sneak peek into the highlands, you see yourself surrounded by mountains covered in moss.
The ice cave is located in Kötlujökull Glacier which is an outlet glacier of Mýrdalsjökull Glacier. Underneath the glacier waits the mighty volcano Katla. Once you arrive to the glacier, your guide will hand you all the necessary ice cave equipment and go over a safety briefing and facts about glaciers and ice caves.
You’ll have to walk up some stairs before you enter the famous cave of “dragon glass”, where volcanic ash and blue ice meet. The view inside the Ice Cave is truly spectacular, you will get the chance to see some amazing black ice as well as some blue ice features.
You’ll walk inside the magical blue and black ice domes of this rare natural phenomenon. The ice inside the cave has colors we don’t think are possible in nature, which is why this cave is also known as the “Dragon Ice Cave” because of Game of Thrones… Prepare to be amazed!
