Esjan, Iceland
Beautiful scenery! Made it to Mt. Steinn and it was so gratifying! Non-stop gorgeous views the entire hike. We went on one of the first days that the northern winds started coming across Reykjavík & it made it very difficult. 40 mph winds, but we talked to locals at the top and this was not common at all. Made it even more gratifying! Stunning & would do it again!
Trail not very well marked and heavily overgrown in places. We attempted the Tan Trail, hiking counter clockwise but due to the poor trail markers (missing or not put in) we got lost and had to turn back. First time in over 30 yrs, hiking in many countries and this is the first time we got lost and couldn’t finish the hike. I would recommend getting a GPS with the trail uploaded or getting a guide book. You can’t rely on the trail markers to save your life. The Icelanders need to take trail marking lessons from the Swiss or Americans. Really a disappointing hike to say the least.
One of the less nice hikes in Iceland, in my honest opinion. There are two ways that lead to that "stone". One steep and one less steep. Both are still very steep and not very enjoyable. The stone is nothing but a stone. You could keep climbing higher but it's even more steep and the view is not ad breathtaking as other views. 3 stars, worth going if you have some time left but not a must.
It's okay, just okay. Everest was much better and more of a real mountain. Also, no vegetarian options.
Great place for walking.
