The most common road-trip in Iceland is driving around the country, following highway number one. It’s about 1400 km (~900 miles) drive with a lot of options for sightseeing, detours and stops along the way. During summer time, road-trips to the Westfjords, the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, Þórsmörk or Landmannalaugar are great options varying in length. If you’re adventurous, you can also rent a 4x4 vehicle in the summer and head up to the highlands. Wherever and whenever you go just remember to drive safely, follow weather and road-conditions carefully. Roads frequently close down (particularly in winter) and driving conditions can get challenging.
