The first stop is the historic Varvakios Market. First constructed in the late 19th century, this municipal market has been continuously open for over 125 years since taking the place of its predecessor following a deadly fire in 1884. Take in all the sights, smells and sounds while strolling through its narrow aisles, observing the piles of produce, watching the busy meat and fish vendors and people-watching the throngs of shoppers picking up their daily supplies.
Stop at: Philopappos Hill, Athens
Next it’s on to Athen’s most famous landmark, Philoppapou Hill. It should be relatively crowd-free this early, and is perfect for exploring. Get a brief overview of the site, and then spend some time wandering around.
Stop at: Plateia Syntagmatos, Athens
Finally, head to the Hatzis Pastry Shop on Syntagma Square for a breakfast of traditional cheese or spinach pie and Greek coffee or espresso. Return back to your hotel with your guide, or continue exploring from here.
