Dedicated to the goddess of victory, the Temple of Athena Nike is a smaller temple on the Acropolis and was built in 420 BC. Built in the Ionic order, the elegant columns with fluted grooves in homage to the feminine elements of the goddess. It was designed by the architect Kallikrates. Surely one of the places you should visit when you come to Athens for the first time.

The Temple of Athena Nike or (as it was called during Roman times ) The Temple of Athena Nike is a small amphibious Ionic temple on the Acropolis of Athens. Here the guardian goddess Athena Nike, the "ancestor", that is, without wings, was kept, never to leave the city of Athens. In the same place there was an archaic temple of Athena, probably from the time of the Peisistratids (561-510 BC). Remains of this temple were preserved in the bastion of the classical era, which supports the temple. Beneath the classical temple, two altars and a small sanctuary were found where the goddess xanthus was kept on a stone base. This sanctuary was destroyed, along with the rest of the Acropolis, by the Persians in 480 BC. but it was rebuilt soon after. The oxen escaped the disaster because the Athenians had been prevented from transporting it to Salamis.

This temple is just a small shrine on the right side of Propylaia when you enter the Acropolis. You cannot get too close, but there is something captivating in the small building seen with a distant hill as background. Brink water and a hat. Bought tix online. The feels r awesome, thousands of yrs of history... still standing!

This temple of Athena Nike was considered one of the most sacred on the hill having the sacred Olive tree.Legend has it that Zeus offered a contest between Athena and Poseidon for staking claim to Athens. Poseidon hit his trident on a hard rock of the Acropolis and created a water spring while Athena on the other hand produced an olive tree with her spear using her wisdom.Athenians who were the final judge of the competition proclaimed Athena the winner and thus Acropolis became the seat of Athena and the city "Athens" or "Athina" as is pronounced in Greek.

A slightly strenuous walk if you're not that fit on what is at times slippery marble, but, it's another of those places you really should visit before you die. Very busy. Good amenities.
