Spinalonga, Greece
Back to the history. A place u will never forget. People live there for ever due to the disease... #
A really interesting place to visit. Lovely boat to get there.
This small island worth a great half-day trip. Spinalonga island has a long and interesting history. A 16th century Venetian fortress, Ottoman buildings, and the houses and the hospital of the last leper colony of Europe (until 1957). To get to the island, you need a 10 euro boat ride ticket and an 8 euro entry ticket. There is a small kiosk/restaurant on the island. The main path is stroller/wheelchair accessible, but not the upper parts of the island.
Visited as part of a TUI excursion. We had a guided tour which was fantastic. So much history to take in. The island its self is very spectacular with its fortifications. We were one of the first boats to arrive in the morning so had the place to ourselves. As we left around 11am it was starting to get very busy. If you go then go early.
Great place for half a day trip.
