Fantastic trip down the Gorge. Trails are good, lots of refilling spots along the path for fresh cool free water. Great sights and changing terrain and you get a nice treat at the end with relaxing by the beach in the town at the end, you can also enjoy a nice meal or a snack. There is also plenty to see by the end if you feel like it, like a small castle ruin on top of the hill over the village. This is how a nature Park is supposed to be like :) It is also very doable by car. Go to the top start, pay the parking fee. Upon finishing the Gorge you have to pay the Ferry ticket (or walk back up the mountain...) get on the Ferry. When you get off at the stop to the West you can take a bus straight back to the start and your car.

We did the standard Samaria tour with Thomas from ELAFONISSOS TRAVEL as guide in late Aug 2019. He was very helpful on both the bus trip out and back, and took time to carefully explain what to expect in the gorge, as well as all the timings and what is to happen on the other side with lunch/swims/ferries etc. This put everyone at ease on our bus. The gorge itself was spectacular and not as hot as anticipated. The initial descent is hard on the knees, but it levels out. You definitely need sturdy footwear, we saw folks doing the hike in flip flops and this is a poor choice given how long the hike is. This was our first tour during our 2 weeks' holidays in Greece and it set the standard really high as well as well being great value. Would recommend Samaria gorge tour to all those who are able for the hike!

Amazing gorge, beautiful views, it is really stunning. It is a bit of a challenge, so do some research and check whether you are fit enough to do it. We saw a few people on the way who could not do it, became weak, and had therefore actually injured themselves so they had to be picked up with a mule. You should have basic fitness, have solid hiking shoes and be sure-footed.

The way it is advertised all over Crete you would think that it's an easy walk... However it's not - it's very challenging. Most of the way track is very rocky, and if you are not always looking down, chances are high that you will slip and hurt yourself (which happened to 5 people that I saw on our way through). I saw a lot of people in sandals - and urge you not to make same mistake they did. Wear proper shoes. Sights are truly spectacular and breathtaking, but you hardly see anything because you are forced to always look down at your feet. Am I glad I went there? - yes! Would I go again? - no! Would I have gone there if I knew how rocky it was? - probably not.

Ultimately beautiful gorge. It's as impressive as it's massive. Definitely a must on Crete!
