What a stupendous collection of icons beautifully displayed in an amazing historic building. If you go there don't forget to wander in the extensive gardens which are an oasis in the middle if Athens and are free to enter. Just now there is a great exhibition of sculptures. Try the cafe restaurant also as it is excellent.

I came to see the impact of historical events (like the sacking of Constantinople by the fourth crusade) on Byzantine/Greek culture. If you are interested in that the museum delivers famously. There are a lot of pieces from times before Christmas up to the modern age with a focus on the transition period between Rome and the Byzantine empire and it's follow-up States. What I looked best are the descriptive texts that give you a reference which allows you to understand each piece. Now that there are quite a few religious icons/paintings which I found mostly uninspiring/uninteresting but if you are into those, then this museum is strictly a must-see!

I was well aware that the exhibition was mostly religious and Christian... I was impressed with the calibre of the Art and its history, not its content. The Byzantine Era is full, no doubt. I paid 8 Euros which for the right person would have been good value for money. However in the garden in the open air was a Mish mash of sculptures and the like. Some of the exhibits I found interesting and thought provoking. Please do understand that I do not profess to be AN art critic, just pontificating as you do when you think you have something to say and someone is listening. On the whole, I am glad I went because I love the main building. It could be what I want my dream house to look like. Oh yes after having taken some, I was informed that selfies are not allowed.

Absolutely fascinating museum, really interesting pieces of early Christian history and Greco-Roman pieces. 8 euros for easily 4 hours of history. The building is also fairly easy to navigate. We had a person with a cast on one leg and there was plenty of stone benches for her to sit constantly. Absolutely must visit location.

Museum for person who likes icons and religious things. You can see here a lot of pictures of Jesus Christ and others saints. If you think about byzantine's art you shouldn't expect nothing more than connection with church. But I enjoyed that.
