The Highlights of the Ring Road

These are the places where you should make a stop while driving the Ring Road of Iceland. If you're driving anti-clockwise, the first attractions to see appear first on the list.

Image - Reykjadalur
The Reykjadalur Hot Spring Hike on Your Own
Hilmar Þór:Reykjadalur Hot Spring could be an ideal first stop on your Ring Road Adventure. You'll have to hike for an hour to get there, but it's well worth the effort.
Image - Seljalandsfoss
Hilmar Þór:Seljalandsfoss is a majestic waterfall in the south of Iceland. The best thing about it is that you can actually walk behind it.
Image - Seljavellir Geothermal Pool
Seljavellir Geothermal Pool
Hilmar Þór:This is the oldest swimming pool in Iceland. It's heated up with geothermal water but it doesn't have any facilities like most swimming pools in Iceland. Which makes the visit even more fun.
Image - Skógafoss
Hilmar Þór:Probably the prettiest waterfall in Iceland. You can see it from the road, but it's recommended to park by the waterfall and do a bit of hiking around it.
Image - Solheimasandur Plane Wreck
Solheimasandur Plane Wreck
Hilmar Þór:This plane wreck is just sitting on the vast Sólheimasandur Sand. It takes one to two hours to walk there from the road, so it's a bit of a mission to see it.
Image - Dyrhólaey
Hilmar Þór:Dyrhólaey is an impressive rock formation close to Reynisfjara Black Beach. It's possible to walk on the cliff (if you dare).
Image - Reynisfjara Beach
Reynisfjara Beach
Hilmar Þór:The most famous black beach in Iceland. Extremely dramatic and home to a ton of puffins.
Image - Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon
Fjaðrárgljúfur Canyon
Hilmar Þór:Amazing canyon just a few kilometres from the Ring Road. Stop there for an hour and take a swim in the river if you're feeling adventurous.
Image - Svartifoss
Hilmar Þór:This gorgeous waterfall is located in Skaftafell National Park. You could easily spend the whole day hiking in the park and enjoying the beautiful surroundings.
Image - Jökulsárlón Iceberg Lagoon
Jökulsárlón Iceberg Lagoon
Hilmar Þór:Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is one of the most unique things you'll see during your trip!
Image - Hoffell Hot Tubs
Hoffell Hot Tubs
Hilmar Þór:Outdoor hut tubs close to the town of Höfn.
Image - Djúpivogur
Djúpivogur: A Guide to Iceland’s First Slow City
Hilmar Þór:A charming little fishing village in the Eastfjords of Iceland.
Image - Hallormsstadhaskogur
Hilmar Þór:Iceland's largest forest can be found in the Eastfjords of Iceland. It's called Hallormsstaðaskógur and it's very nice.
Image - Mývatn Nature Baths
Mývatn Nature Baths
Hilmar Þór:North Iceland's answer to the Blue Lagoon.
Image - Mývatn
Hilmar Þór:You could easily spend a day or two exploring Lake Mývatn and the surrounding areas.
Image - Goðafoss Waterfall
Goðafoss Waterfall
Hilmar Þór:Easily seen from the Ring Road, shortly before you arrive in the town of Akureyri.
Image - Grábrók
Hilmar Þór:This crater is super cool and accessible even for kids. Park the car and get your family to join you on a mini-hike up to Grábrók.
Image - Glanni Waterfall
Glanni Waterfall
Hilmar Þór:Glanni Waterfall is just minutes away from Grábrók crater.
Image - Lofthellir Lava Cave
Lofthellir Lava Cave
Hilmar Þór:A breathtaking cave, close to Lake Myvatn.
Image - Paradísarlaut
Hilmar Þór:Just a minute's walk from Glanni Waterfall. Why not do a little picnic in Paradise Hollow instead of eating at some random gas station by the road?

Tired from driving? Here are some excellent activities within a close reach from the Ring Road.

Good Campsites by the Ring Road

There are plenty of campsites close to the Ring Road but some are better than others. Here are a few we can recommend:

Image - Þakgil
Hilmar Þór:One of the most amazing campsites in Iceland, well worth the detour from the Ring Road.
Image - Hamragarðar
Image - Skógar
Hilmar Þór:A beautiful campsite, just make sure you don't camp too close to the waterfall because it's really loud.
Image - Djúpivogur
Hilmar Þór:A gorgeous little village in the Eastfjords.
Image - Kjarnaskógur
Hilmar Þór:A nice campsite, very close to Akureyri.
Image - Ásbyrgi Camp Site
Ásbyrgi Camp Site
Hilmar Þór:This is a pretty big detour from the Ring Road, but Ásbyrgi is very pretty and the campsite is nice.
